From the 1930s onwards, wildcatters were battling to .250-3000 Savage to handle .22-caliber bullets. This original wildcat shot became the subject of shooter circles under the name of .22 Varminter and gained a large fan base. It wasn’t as powerful as the .220 Swift, but the .22 Varminter didn’t burn barrels and throats as rapidly as the Swift and didn’t eat the same amount of powder. When Remington finally standardized this ammo in 1965, its introduction was the most anticipated cartridge release.
